THe Impacts of the 2011 earthquake
The earthquake that hit Christchurch had a Richter Scale of 6.3, but was very strong because it was only 5 km under the ground. 10 minutes after the major earthquake there were 10 aftershocks with a magnitude of 4 or more.
During the earthquake 185 people died, many thousands were injured and 164 were seriously injured. 115 people died in the Canterbury Television Building when it collapsed and 18 people died when the Pyne Gould Corporation Building collapsed.

The 2011 earthquake damaged water pipes, roads, bridges, power lines, cell phone towers, normal phone lines and buildings. Stone and brick buildings were damaged. around 100 000 buildings were damaged and 10 000 needed to be demolished. The cities cathedral also lost its spire. The damage made it hard for all of the emergency services to get to their patients. 80% of the city also went without electricity. After the main earthquake and the 10 after shocks hundreds of kilometres worth of sewage pipe was destroyed.
Not only was the city impacted physically the citizens were also mentally impacted. There were lots of people who decided to leave the city and travel to a much more safer place to live. There was also a lot of panic and confusion in town as the earthquake occurred, during the after shocks and during the clean up.
Some natural events that the earthquake impacted was that there was a lot of liquefaction, causing the buildings and roads to sink down into the ground. As well as the land became unstable and very hard to rebuild on.
The homeliness and kindness shown to the people of Christchurch after the earthquake was amazing other places in New Zealand took in families and the childeren went to school in the place that they had been moved to with their family. There were also rescue crews that came to help out from all around the world, some of the rescue crews came from Japan, United States, United Kingdom, Taiwan, Australia and some other places.
Because of the earthquake New Zealand came up with a method of telling the public the danger of the different places in Christchurch. It was in specific colour coded zones.
Green Zone:
The land was undamaged and can be built on.
Orange Zone:
The land needs more checks before it is deemed safe to build on.
White Zone:
The land has not been checked yet.
Red Zone:
The land is very un-stable, building safely on it would be very difficult.
Green Zone:
